Okuhikari is a late-season sencha variety developed at Shizuoka Tea Research Station through artificial crossing with Yabukita as the mother and Chinese varieties from seedling groups collected from Yangloudong, Hubei Province, China in 1933 as the father. It is harvested 5-6 days later than Yabukita, with an upright tree form and strong tree vigor. New shoots are bud-heavy type with dark green leaf color. It has distinctive strong aroma and extremely good liquor color but mild taste. It is strong against anthracnose, ring spot disease, and mochi disease, and has somewhat strong cold resistance. Cutting root formation is good and nursery performance is excellent.
