Yamanami is a medium-season variety for kamairi-cha (pan-fired tea) registered in 1965, selected from natural cross-pollinated seedlings of Chinese varieties introduced from Hubei Province, China. It was developed at the Tea Breeding Research Laboratory of the Kawaminami Branch of Miyazaki Prefecture Agricultural Experiment Station with financial support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. It shows vigorous growth and high yield from the young tree stage, with strong cold resistance. The picking season is 3-4 days later than Takchiho, with excellent tea quality. Cultivation is possible in the Kyushu region, particularly recommended in Kagoshima, Kumamoto, and Miyazaki prefectures. It plays an important role as a variety suitable for kamairi-cha production utilizing the characteristics of Chinese varieties.
