Description

Yamatomidori was developed when the Tea Branch of Nara Prefecture Agricultural Experiment Station was established in Horren-cho, Nara City in 1924, by collecting native seeds from various places in Nara Prefecture. It is an individual selected from seedlings of seeds collected from the tea garden of Fukui Kanjiro in Kamitsu, Yamazoe Village, Yamabe District. Investigations were conducted from 1928 to 1935, and this variety was considered most promising, registered in 1958, and named 'Yamatomidori' after the breeding location. It has excellent quality among late-season varieties with good taste. The harvest period is about 10 days later than Yabukita, and the budding period is also late, so it can avoid late frost damage. It has very strong cold resistance and disease resistance, making it cultivable even in cold regions and areas prone to late frost damage. It has high fruit setting with high genetic purity of seeds. Initial growth is somewhat inferior but branching is good. It is highly productive with strong resistance to pests and diseases.
